Publication in the Journal for Nature Conservation

Our colleagues, Professor Elena Bužan and Professor Boštjan Pokorny, in collaboration with co-authors, have published an original scientific article entitled A new wildlife monitoring app in Slovenia: A pilot evaluation of data quality and use in the international peer-reviewed journal Journal for Nature Conservation.

The article addresses the use of SRNA, a national citizen science application developed for wildlife monitoring in Slovenia. The app is intended for both hunters and other nature observers and, in addition to collecting observation data, also incorporates educational elements, including a photo-based species identification quiz and species identification guides. Within the framework of the pilot study, the authors evaluated the quality of the collected data and examined users’ performance in identifying different wildlife species.

The findings indicate that hunters and other nature observers contribute complementary datasets, differing in reporting patterns, the number of recorded species, the spatial distribution of observations, and the timing of data submission.

The study highlights the potential of the SRNA app as a valuable supplementary tool for wildlife monitoring in Slovenia, while also pointing to certain methodological limitations related to data bias and the verification of submitted records.
