The Pedological Association of Slovenia organised a professional excursion to Pohorje on Tuesday, 10 September 2024.
The members of the association first went to the research plot of the intensive monitoring of the forest ecosystems of Tratica. A theoretical presentation of the Pohorje region, its geographical features, the distribution of the area and its specific characteristics in terms of its parent material, relief, climate, water conditions and the living biota followed at the site.
Next, they looked at a digital pedological map of Pohorje and at the different soil types and their representation in the area. They learnt about the differences in soil structure and elemental composition, which have an important influence on the plant community, which is totally dependent on the soil. The need for sustainability and the sustainable use of natural resources were emphasised. The composition and importance of the Pohorje forests, which account for 5% of Slovenia’s forests, was also explained. There are also many hunting areas in this area.
