Today, 10 November, Slovenia celebrates Science Day for the very first time — a day dedicated to the vital role science plays in shaping our society and our future. This new national holiday, though not a work-free day, invites us to reflect on how deeply science influences our daily lives and drives progress in every field.
At the Faculty of Environmental Protection (FVO), science and research are at the heart of everything we do. We believe that turning scientific discoveries into real-world solutions is key to addressing today’s environmental challenges. Through knowledge, research, and collaboration, we can build a more sustainable future — for people and the planet.
The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr. Igor Papič, reminded us that “science isn’t confined to laboratories and universities — it’s all around us.” He emphasized that without scientists, there would be no progress in medicine, technology, social development, or quality of life. Science Day, he added, is also a way to express gratitude to all researchers who make the world a better place.
In her message, President Nataša Pirc Musar highlighted the power of critical thinking and curiosity, the driving forces behind every scientific discovery. She described Slovenia as a nation of innovators and creative minds who constantly push the boundaries of what’s possible.
| The date of this new holiday is symbolic — 10 November marks the anniversary of Baron Žiga Zois (1747–1819), one of Slovenia’s most important Enlightenment figures and a great supporter of science and culture. Coincidentally, UNESCO also declared this date the World Science Day for Peace and Development back in 2001, underscoring the role of science in promoting peace, sustainability, and global cooperation. |
On this first Science Day, we at the Faculty of Environmental Protection would like to thank all researchers for their dedication and contributions to understanding and protecting our environment. Together, through science and shared knowledge, we are building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable tomorrow
