16th Slovenian Hunting Day: Interventions in Wildlife Habitats

On Saturday, 15 November 2025, the Hunting Association of Slovenia and its Scientific and Expert Council organized the 16th Slovenian Hunting Day, the country’s leading professional gathering of experts in wildlife research, conservation, and management. This year’s event took place at the Department of Forestry, Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana, with the central theme focusing on Interventions in Wildlife Habitats.

The event brought together numerous domestic specialists who shared the latest findings, experiences, and research approaches in monitoring and conserving wildlife populations and other free-living animal species. The program featured a diverse range of presentations, covering topics such as:

  • The impact of environmental interventions on wildlife and their habitats.

  • Changes in landscapes and their effects on wildlife populations over time.

  • Ecological connectivity in Slovenia and the role of various landscape elements in maintaining habitat connectivity for wildlife.

  • Content-related and legal aspects of environmental impact assessment procedures.

Researchers from the Faculty of Environmental Protection also actively contributed, presenting results from their studies:

  • Prof. Dr. Boštjan Pokorny: Large-scale, linear, and point interventions: experiences with spatial planning and their impact on wildlife.

  • Assoc. Prof. Klemen Kotnik: Management of wildlife and their habitats in environmental assessment and strategic impact assessment procedures.

  • Asst. Zarja Platovšek: Impacts of wind farms on wildlife: an overview of research findings.

The entire event, including the presentations by FVO researchers, was conducted under the CRP project “V4-2412: Identification and Assessment of Anthropogenic Impacts on Wildlife Habitats.”

The 16th Slovenian Hunting Day once again highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in understanding human impacts on the natural environment and in developing sustainable spatial management solutions.
