New Scientific Publication on Martens in Slovenia and Croatia

Members of the research group of the Faculty of Environmental Protection, Prof. Dr. Elena Bužan and Prof. Dr. Boštjan Pokorny, together with co-authors, have published a new scientific study examining the genetic diversity of two of the most widespread marten species: the European pine marten (Martes martes) and the stone marten (Martes foina).

The study was based on the analysis of mitochondrial DNA and microsatellites from numerous samples of both species collected in Slovenia and Croatia. The results show that the two species respond differently to landscape characteristics, highlighting the importance of species-specific approaches in the conservation, monitoring, and management of wildlife.
