National recognition for sustainability in higher education awarded for an innovative research solution in the field of microplastic monitoring in watercourses<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Faculty of Environmental Protection has received a special recognition within the national ED.VITA award<\/strong> in the Research and Innovation<\/strong> category for the \u00b5PlastiTrap I project<\/strong>. The award, which recognizes achievements in sustainability in higher education, was presented for the first time on 18 March 2026 by the Slovenian Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (NAKVIS) and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation.<\/p>\n

The \u00b5PlastiTrap I project<\/strong> was developed in response to the need for monitoring microplastics in the Paka and Savinja rivers, particularly after the 2023 floods, when large amounts of plastic debris remained in river channels and riparian areas. Since standard sampling methods are often not suitable for small and shallow watercourses, the project focuses on the development of a portable, affordable, and reliable sampler. This device enables the field filtration of several thousand liters of water and allows for more accurate determination of microplastic concentrations. The project has been underway since March 2023 and also includes seasonal monitoring at eight locations.<\/p>\n

A particular strength of the project lies in its integration of research, innovative development, and higher education. Students are actively involved in prototype development, field measurements, and laboratory analyses, which helps strengthen their competencies in sustainable development, environmental monitoring, and applied research. The methodology is also transferable to other watercourses and provides a solid basis for broader microplastic monitoring in Slovenia and beyond.<\/p>\n

Upon receiving the recognition, Assoc. Prof. Anja Bubik, PhD, researcher and initiator of the project<\/strong>, stated:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see this special ED.VITA recognition as an important confirmation that even a smaller, professionally focused higher education institution can develop solutions with tangible research, educational, and societal impact. The \u00b5PlastiTrap I project emerged from a real need in the environment and the region, and its particular value lies in linking research, innovation, and the active involvement of students in addressing current environmental challenges.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The \u00b5PlastiTrap I project<\/strong> is being developed within the framework of the international Interreg Europe PLASTIX project<\/strong> and makes an important contribution to understanding the origin, dynamics, and transport of microplastics in smaller watercourses. At the same time, it supports the development of preventive measures following extreme weather events, improved waste management, and the sustainable management of water resources.<\/p>\n

This recognition confirms the quality of the Faculty of Environmental Protection\u2019s research work and its commitment to developing concrete sustainable solutions that connect science, education, and environmental needs.<\/p>\n
