Prof. Dr. Natalija \u0160peh<\/strong>, in co-authorship with<strong data-start=\"103\" data-end=\"139\">\u00a0Prof. Dr. Robert Lon\u010dari\u0107<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unizd.hr\/eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Zadar<\/a>), published an original scientific article in the journal <em data-start=\"219\" data-end=\"227\">Coasts<\/em> titled <em data-start=\"235\" data-end=\"379\"><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/coasts5020013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Marine Macro-Plastics Litter Features and Their Relation to the Geographical Settings of the Selected Adriatic Islands, Croatia (2018\u20132023)&#8221;<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/em>(<em data-start=\"383\" data-end=\"529\">&#8220;Odlaganje plasti\u010dnih makro odpadkov na obalo in njihova povezanost z geografskimi zna\u010dilnostmi izbranih jadranskih otokov, Hrva\u0161ka (2018\u20132023)&#8221;<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"532\" data-end=\"1147\">Marine and coastal litter (ML) represents a significant burden for islands, including those in the Adriatic Sea, despite their remoteness from the mainland and sparse population. The study hypothesized that natural characteristics of islands influence the distribution of ML. An integrated geographical approach was used, combining field survey results with the following aspects: (1) coastline orientation and bay density, (2) exposure and vegetation presence\/biomass share, (3) island area and bay density, (4) bay openness and amount of ML, and<br data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1090\" \/>(5) bay openness and the proportion of plastic within ML. The study followed the direction of the East Adriatic Current and included the islands of <strong data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1284\">Lo\u0161inj, Pa\u0161man, Vis, Kornati, and Elafiti<\/strong>, covering the period <strong data-start=\"1306\" data-end=\"1319\">2018\u20132023<\/strong>. The results showed that coastlines oriented <strong data-start=\"1365\" data-end=\"1382\">NE\u2013SE and W\u2013E<\/strong> are more susceptible to ML accumulation, particularly in the southern Adriatic. A stronger correlation was observed between the density of polluted bays and the surface area of smaller islands (&lt;10 km\u00b2) compared to larger ones (&gt;10 km\u00b2).
